About the Copernicus Hackathon

On March 2020, 7th – 14th, Kapitech together with Astri Polska, Institute of Geodesy and Cartography, SkyHub invite all teams, start-ups, programming, GIS, space, business and marketing enthusiasts to take part in the second edition of the Copernicus Hackathon Poland.
The Copernicus Hackathon will give you the chance to come and explore many Earth Observation application fields here on Earth with free and open source data from Copernicus. The event will take place in Łódź, where participants will work on 8 challenges.
This time the Copernicus Hackathon hErO 2nd edition offer is addressed to TEAMS THAT ALREADY EXISTS (before the implementation of the first Phase – Practical workshops phase).
You will be also supported by the team of technical and business experts.

The Copernicus Accelerator is a project of the European Commission’s DG Growth, and is part of the Copernicus Start-up Programme, which is designed to accompany start-ups from the generation of a business idea to its full commercialisation (https://accelerator.copernicus.eu/).​

Who can join

Everyone above 18 years old and residents of EU Member States (+ Norway and Iceland). 
Only EXISTING TEAMS can participate in Copernicus Hackathon. If you have a team with an interesting idea, this hackathon is for you.
Each team will consist from 2-5 people with different profiles. Such number of participants is optimal to provide good business and technical support for everyone and enough attention to participants during the technical workshops.
We are looking for:
  1. Specialists in Computer Sciences: people who can code and put the processed data into the nice user interface and make it usable
  2. Sectorial scientists with specific profiles like agricultural universities, universities of life sciences, technical universities with specialization in air quality and environmental monitoring, energy departments in universities etc.
  3. Young entrepreneurs students and specialists from business schools with specializations on Economy, Marketing, Business administration
  4. Technical specialists: GIS, Big Data.
  5. Everyone interested
Each team should be composed by people with experstise in: GIS/EO, computer development, graph and interface design, marketing, business and thematic expert (agriculture, energy, forestry etc.) and many more. However GIS/EO expert and IT developer and business person is a must for each team.


The Hackathon will be divided into three phases:

Phase 2: Days 2 – 6, Mentorship week – March 9-13, 2020 (Monday-Friday)
The second phase is a mentorship week where teams will have one week to improve the solution and develop it technically. During this time teams will locally work with the mentors that will support them on the data usage, IT and mobile solutions development, as well as business and other technical issues.

Thursday, 12th March 2020
Self-Work / 15:00- 18:00 Review of the progress with hackathon organizer, preparation for the pitches.
Friday, 13th March 2020
Self-work / 14:00 – 17:00 Final review for all teams.
Phase 3: Day 7, Final
The national final willl take place in Łódź, 14th March 2020. Gathered jury will select the winner who would win the main prize.
