On November 2018, 8th – 17th, Kapitech together with Astri Polska, Institute of Geodesy and Cartography, Krakow Technology Park, UMCS invite all programming, GIS, space, business and marketing enthusiasts to take part in Copernicus Hackathon Poland.

The Copernicus Hackathon will give you the chance to come and explore many Earth Observation application fields here on Earth with free and open source data from Copernicus. The event will take place in three cities, where participants will work on the solutions for the Key Intelligent Specializations in particular regions, to help solve regional problems. Together with other enthusiasts you will get access to Copernicus data and virtual machine where all open source software will be delivered via RUS platform. You will be also supported by the team of technical and business experts.

The Hackathon will be devided into three phases:

Phase 1: Day 1

Day 1 is the day of the Hackathon which will comprise two parts:

  • 4 hours practical workshop for beginners and those ones more advanced in EO data. Workshops will be conducted by Earth Obeservation experts from Astri Polska and Institue of Geodesy and Cartography
  • 4 hours Design Thinking Creathon where you will work on the business idea for the selected challenge and prepare yourself for the development of technical side of the solution. During this part you will be supported by the Design Thinking moderators

By the end of Day 1 each team will pitch their idea and the best team from each location will be qualified for the national final, which will take place one week later.

Phase 2: Days 2 – 6

The second phase is a mentorship week where teams will have one week to improve the solution and develop it technically. During this time teams will locally work with the mentors that will support them on the data usage, IT and mobile solutions development, as well as business and other technical issues.

Phase 3: Day 7, Final

The national final willl take place in Warsaw on the 17th November 2018. Gathered jury will select the winner who would win the main prize.6


The major prize is the Acceleration program in Copernicus. 

The Copernicus Accelerator is a project of the European Commission’s DG Growth, and is part of the Copernicus Start-up Programme, which is designed to accompany start-ups from the generation of a business idea to its full commercialisation (https://accelerator.copernicus.eu/).

Everyone above 18 years old and residents of EU Member States (+ Norway and Iceland). 

For the hackathon in each city we are targeting a number of maximum 30 participants.

Each team will consist from 2-5 people with different profiles. Such number of participants for each location is optimal to provide good business and technical support for everyone and enough attention to participants during the technical workshops.

We are looking for:

  1. Technical specialists: GIS, Big Data.
  2. Specialists in Computer Sciences: people who can code and put the processed data into the nice user interface and make it usable
  3. Sectorial scientists with specific profiles like agricultural universities, universities of life sciences, technical universities with specialization in air quality and environmental monitoring, energy departments in universities etc.
  4. Young entrepreneurs students and specialists from business schools with specializations on Economy, Marketing, Business administration
  5. Everyone interested

Each team should be composed by people with experstise in: GIS/EO, computer development, graph and interface design, marketing, business and thematic expert (agriculture, energy, forestry etc.) and many more. However GIS/EO expert and IT developer and business person is a must for each team.
